Tarot Avatara, the deck is made up of 78 cards produced from 78 original paintings, all artwork is made by Gabi Angus-West.
Each image seeks to blend a traditional understanding of the tarot symbology of a given card, with a moment of Frida Kahlo, her life, her loves or her art. The Tarot system most closely aligned with Avatara is the deep and beautiful Crowley Harris Thoth Tarot, Avatara is fully illustrated, with a far stronger narrative voice than the more abstract and mystical Thoth deck and reads with the simplicity of the popular Rider-Waite Smith deck with which so many Tarotists are familiar.
Each card measures 80mm x 120mm which is a few mm wider than a standard RWS deck. Avatara has very slim, neutral, somewhat crop-able borders and is printed on 350gsm linen stock. The card backs are hand-painted too and thus almost perfectly reversible.
The Tarot Avatara deck is supplied with a postcard-sized, rather fanciful, journal-style companion book, this is written, edited and formatted ready for print. The writing style is surprising, a little audacious and you may love it or hate it. The companion is printed in black and white only, a stylistic decision in keeping with the diary-like nature of the book. The deck and book are packaged in a lovely sturdy box.
